The baby’s crying, your toddler’s mid-tantrum on the floor, and you can feel your own chest tightening — the countdown to snapping has already started. You don’t have twenty minutes for a breathing exercise. You barely have twenty seconds. Good news: that’s actually enough.
In this article, we will share a simple, quick breathwork practice to help overstimulated parents find their calm again.

Why Breath Works Faster Than Willpower
Trying to “stay calm” through willpower alone rarely works once your nervous system has already tipped into overload — by then, your thinking brain has less influence than your body’s stress response. Breath is one of the few tools that works directly on the body, which is exactly why it can shift things faster than any amount of self-talk.
And it is the most accessible, whether you’re about to lose your shit at the grocery store, in the car park, leaving the park, or at home; it is the most accessible tool we have.

The 60-Second Reset
- Breathe in for a count of four
- Hold gently for a count of four
- Breathe out slowly for a count of six — longer than the in-breath
- Repeat three to five times, even with a baby on your hip or a toddler mid-meltdown beside you
The longer exhale is what signals safety to your nervous system. You don’t need stillness or quiet for it to work — just the breath itself. If you’d like to check where your own regulation sits right now, try our free Nervous System Quiz.
Practice It Before You Need It
This reset works best when it’s familiar, so it’s worth practising on an ordinary afternoon, not just saving it for crisis moments. Related read: Why Do I Snap at My Kids When I’m Overstimulated?
