A gentle rhythm for real family life
The Family Gratitude Journal was created for families who want more calm and connection — without adding another thing to their to-do list.
Designed for just 10 minutes a day, this gratitude journal for families helps parents and children pause, reflect, and reconnect through simple gratitude practices that fit into busy mornings and gentle bedtime routines.
This isn’t about perfection or positive thinking. It’s about creating small, meaningful moments where everyone feels seen, heard, and grounded.
Created by Rachel Whytcross, Family Wellbeing Specialist, Yoga and Mindfulness Educator, and Founder of Shine Om (Canberra, Australia).

How using the Family Gratitude Journal works
Each day follows a simple rhythm:
- 5 minutes in the morning to set the tone for the day
- 5 minutes before bed to reflect, regulate, and reconnect
- Or 10 minutes at a time that works for your family — think around dinner time, after school or before bed.
Families can write, draw, talk, or simply notice together — making it suitable for different ages, moods, and energy levels. For example, tonight, my eldest daughter wrote that she was grateful to have seen the dog next door and drew a picture of it. That was our whole entry — and it was enough.
What this family gratitude practice looks like in real life
Morning (5 minutes) – often while we are getting dressed or after breakfast.
- A simple prompt to notice something good or set an intention for the day.
- Some days, we share one of the family affirmations
- Children can write, draw, or talk about their response.
Evening (5 minutes) – usually at dinner or around the kitchen while dinner is being prepared
- A gentle reflection on the day — what felt good, what helped, or what they appreciated.
- A moment for parents and children to reconnect before bedtime.
Over time, these small daily pauses build a rhythm of calm, emotional awareness, and connection at home. Check out the clip below to view what our family gratitude practice looks like when we use the gratitude journal for kids under 4.

What families often say

“My child prefers drawing instead of writing, and the journal makes that completely okay.”
“It’s the first gratitude practice we’ve actually kept doing.”

A gentle note
People hesitate because they worry the product might sit unused. There’s no “right way” to use this journal.
Some days, families write; some days, they draw; and some days, they simply talk through the prompts together. And some days, myself included, we don’t do anything at all – and that’s ok!
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s creating small moments of connection that feel doable in real life.
